Scrapmaw

Danger Rating: 3/5

The Scrapmaw is a fast, four-legged mechanical beast that patrols predefined routes through Nullscape's biomes. It combines speed with surprising burst damage, making it dangerous when it catches you off-guard during exploration. Unlike most enemies that react to player presence, the Scrapmaw follows its patrol regardless of where you are — until you enter its detection radius.

Behavior Pattern

Scrapmaws traverse fixed patrol routes along corridors and between rooms. While patrolling, they move at moderate speed and can be easily observed and planned around. However, when a player enters their detection range (roughly 6 tiles), they immediately break patrol and enter a chase mode.

In chase mode, Scrapmaws are terrifyingly fast — significantly faster than the base player movement speed. They close gaps quickly and attack with a lunging bite that deals heavy damage. They can also perform a short leap attack to cover gaps and reach elevated platforms, making standard vertical safety less reliable against them. Scrapmaws give up the chase after the player breaks line of sight for 5 consecutive seconds.

Spawn Conditions

Scrapmaws appear in Withered Expanse, Bloom Corridors, and industrial-themed biomes. They spawn as patrol routes in corridors connecting larger rooms. Typically 2–4 Scrapmaws patrol a single biome section. In Doom in Bloom, Scrapmaw patrols are longer and their detection radius is slightly increased.

Counters

  • Learn patrol routes. Observe Scrapmaw movement patterns from safe positions before advancing.
  • Avoid detection radius. Patrolling Scrapmaws can be bypassed entirely by staying outside their detection range.
  • Break line of sight to escape chase. Duck behind walls or into side rooms and wait 5 seconds.
  • Speed items are essential. Without movement upgrades, you cannot outrun a Scrapmaw in chase mode.

Tips

The biggest mistake players make with Scrapmaws is panicking during a chase and running in a straight line. Scrapmaws are faster in a straight sprint but struggle with sharp turns and vertical movement. Use Double Jump or terrain elevation to break their line of sight quickly. In co-op, one player can bait a Scrapmaw's chase while others loot the patrol area safely. If you hear the Scrapmaw's distinctive metallic clicking sound, slow down and check your surroundings — you may be near a patrol route.
